Find practical tips and examples of how to design effective assessments, mapped against some common assessment modes.

What’s here:

The University of Sussex has a range of approved modes of assessment (available on Regulations for examinations and assessment ), each with a specific code and definition. Your School may have selected a range of approved modes from this list.

The pages below offer practical guidance and things to consider when developing particular types of assessment, mapped against the UoS assessment modes.

Note that, while useful for categorising and mapping assessments (such as across a course), such assessment modes should not be considered a starting point for planning your assessment. See the Curriculum Design section for guidance on how to constructively align your assessment tasks to your learning outcomes.
