In July, Council approved the University’s new Policy Framework, the sets out the approach for the creation, approval and management of all University policies. Any colleagues who are responsible for reviewing & updating existing policies or drafting new policies should familiarise themselves with the Policy Framework, as well as the required template for policies and associated guidance, which can both be found here.
The Policy Framework sets out the key principles and requirements for University policies and includes:
- Clarity on what should or should not be a policy, and how policies differ from other types of documents such as processes, procedures and guidance;
- More detailed responsibilities for Policy Owners, as well as the responsibilities of the Vice-Chancellor, Senate and Council; and
- Information about approval of policies.
Having a clear policy framework and ensuring that the University has a considered set of concise, consistent, and accessible policies in place is important to minimise legal, regulatory and compliance risks for the institution, as well as helping members of the University community understand their individual responsibilities.
In order to achieve this, the Information Management team is liaising with designated points of contact in areas across the University to carry out a full review of all existing policies and will be establishing a single Policy Library for the University.
However, if you are reviewing, updating or drafting a policy, please get in touch with Karen Blackman (Information Manager) directly as early as possible in the process, so that she can provide advice and ensure that any new policies are added to the central record.
